Self Love & Empathy

Self-love and Empathy are buzzwords in today's culture, often thrown around as popular hashtags on social media. But what do they really mean and can we apply that to ourselves ?

Think of it this way : when we get sick we rush to the doctor for medication often we are prescribed antibiotics ( in case of infections), we start taking the medication but here is the twist - once we start feeling better we tend to neglect finishing the course. We know the consequences - antibiotic resistance - but we still fail to care for ourselves properly. Now consider how we treat our pets - if our furry friend falls ill we ensure they receive their medication on time, without fail. So why the double standard? Why do we forget to show ourselves the same care and concern?

Hence when it comes to children or our pets or even our family we shower them with love, attention and concern. But when it comes to ourselves, we often fall short. True self-love isnt just about pampering ourselves with facemasks and sipping on wine and its neither about lounging with a book and coffee. It is about treating ourselves with respect and making choices which nurture our well-being.

Empathy is the crucial first step towards healing a broken relationship.

Just as we guide our children towards healthy habits, offering occasional candies, while prioritizing their health we should do the same for ourselves. And like caring for our pets by providing them with a balanced diet and exercise, we must prioritize with our own physical and mental well-being.

Another example or situation where we need to show oneself empathy is when we are cheated on in a relationship - trust me it is trauma. Choosing oneself after experiencing betrayal in a relationship, especially through infidelity, is a powerful dispaly of self-love. But how does the betrayed partner prioritise themselves during such a challenging time, and what part does empathy play towards healing? When faced with the trauma of betrayal, showing self-love means acknowledging one's worth and well-being above all else. It involves setting boundaries, seeking support, and prioritising personal healing and growth.

Empathy plays a crucial role in the process. By understanding and validating your own emotions, the betrayed partner can begin to heal. Additionally, empathy towards oneself allows for forgiveness and compassion, paving the way for healing and eventual closure.

The other side of the coin is how the betrayer shows empathy - Understanding and empathising with your betrayed partner is the crucial first step in healing a broken relationship. Empathy means truly grasping and sharing your partners emotion's. You might believe you are already empathetic, distancing yourself from those labelled as ''cheaters''. However true empathy means considering the impact of your actions on your partner's feelings, trust and vulnerability.

Empathy doesnt come naturtally to many who have strayed, but it can be learnt through effort. It is a skill that takes time to develop. You will need to listen, communicate openly and make an active effort to see the world through your partners eyes. With patience and genuine effort you can again begin to rebuild trust and connection. Helping a partner heal can eventually result in self-love and a feeling of deep accomplishment.

In conclusion, self-love isnt selfish - its essential. By treating ourselves with the same care and consideration we give to others, we not only foster empathy within ourselves but also create a foundation for a fullfilling and balanced life. So let's make a commitment to practice self-love and empathy every day, because we deserve it.
